I ran the program sfc /scannow from the command line to run a check, and as it was running it asked for the WinXP disc so it could copy over dll cache files. It now seems I've lost over 400mb of drive space on my C: drive. Anyone know where I can find the hopefully "temp" files and get back the space?

Also, in my windows folder there is another folder called "service pack/i386" that's almost 300mb. Is THAT a folder I can remove or is that a critical folder that needs to remain. Running WinXP with Service pack 1.....yes I know it's a dumb question, but just making sure....you can never clear up TOO much hard drive space !

the temporary file should store in C:WINDOWSTemp.

The i386 folder usually located at C:WINDOWSDriver Cache. But your is at something...service packi386, that makes me think you can delete it.

do a search using the windows search on "*.tmp" and delete all the temp file.

I do not know what this tool has done

but there are 2+ temp folders ...
C:WINDOWSTemp
and
C:Documents and SettingsMertschDGLocal SettingsTemp
if ya have more users there will be more folders like this ... (MertschDG is my profilename ... you should have another one)
everything that is within those folders can be deleted anytime without any problems .. if your windows is growing bigger and bigger a fresh install could clean up this mess ... when SP2 final is out I highly recommend to slipstream the SP2 into the original CD and then do a fresh install this is the most efficent and most smart way to have a fast/stable running OS on minimal disk space usage

I do NOT recommend to use any of those cleanup tools !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they delete more then they should in nearly any case ... if ya want to cleanup ... reinstall

But it's locaion is actually :

But it does seem to have a couple of setup files including setup.exe and setupwmp.exe, so this COULD be some kind of temp folder.

so...if u want to know if u can delete or not
then u can first Compress the folder and then delete the original folder
and if nothing happens after deleting for some days
or can delete the compressed folder also

then you can also just rename the folder
but the C:WINDOWSServicePackFilesi386 has some function !! its not useless
I just did a fresh install with SP1a integrated I do not have this folder but as I remember its needed when upgrading a SPx

Was feeling a bit daring.......deleted it, and checked out most of the major and minor functions in Windows and everything AOK!! Not a problem or hitch to report.....thanx guys and gals!
